Lula da Silva called on the government, Congress and the judiciary to work together to move forward with banning online casinos in the country.
Brazil.- President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called for a ban on online casinos in the country.
During a national address on Saturday (March 7), the president said the government intends to talk with deputies and senators to create legislation to ban online casinos. He highlighted the impact the games have on family finances. The president said: “Gambling addiction is a tragedy affecting Brazilian homes. Although most addicts are men, the burden falls on women. Money for food, rent and children’s schooling disappears on the mobile phone screen.”
The president said that while online casinos are legal, land-based establishments remain prohibited. “Casinos are banned in Brazil. It makes no sense to allow ‘Fortune Tiger’ games to enter homes, putting families into debt via their mobile phones,” he said. He then committed to uniting the government, Congress, and the Judiciary to prevent digital casinos from “destroying households.”
Fixed-odds betting was signed off by president Lula da Silva in December 2023. While the bill initially focused on sports betting, amendments were added late in the process to include online casinos.
