A new report urges the state to become the first to ban such bets.
US.- The Campaign for Fairer Gambling has released a report calling on New Jersey lawmakers to ban online microbetting, describing the product as an urgent public health risk. The report, titled “Why New Jersey Must Ban Online Microbetting,” was unveiled during a policy briefing at the New Jersey State House in Trenton.
The report cites research findings that 78 per cent of microbettors meet the criteria for problem gambling. It states that microbetting participants show higher rates of mental health vulnerabilities, including impulse control issues, anxiety, depression and substance abuse, compared with those who wager only on full-game outcomes.
Brianne Doura-Schawohl, director of the Campaign for Fairer Gambling, said: “Legal sports betting in most states, including New Jersey, is less than ten years old, yet 43% of Americans already believe sports betting is bad for society. Highly addictive, slot-like betting products like microbetting are a major reason why people are concerned, and rightfully so. The Lancet medical journal has flagged this form of betting as high-risk. Research substantiates this concern, as 78 per cent of microbettors were found to meet the criteria for problem gambling.”
Microbetting is defined in the report as live proposition wagers placed during a sporting event on the outcome of the next play or action, such as whether the next pitch will be a ball or strike or whether the next football play will gain more than four yards.
The report notes that New Jersey’s problem gambling prevalence stands at 5.7 per cent, nearly three times the national average. It estimates that problem gambling directly affects around 570,000 residents in the state, with a further 3.4 million people impacted indirectly through family and social connections.
