US.- The Virginia House of Delegates has passed a bill proposing a casino and entertainment district in Fairfax County. The proposal heads to Governor Abigail Spanberger, who can sign it into law, or amend or veto it.
SB 756, introduced by Senate majority leader Scott Surovell, was approved by a 64-32 vote after passing the state’s senate by 23 to 14 in February. If signed into law, Fairfax County would join Norfolk, Petersburg, Bristol, Portsmouth, and Danville as localities eligible to host a casino. Voters in the County would still need to approve the casino through a local referendum.
A similar proposal passed the state Senate last year but didn’t make it out of a House subcommittee.
In January, The Cordish Companies and Bruce Smith Enterprise celebrated the opening of the temporary Live! Casino Virginia in Petersburg. Located off I-95, the venue has 75,000 square feet of gaming space with more than 900 slot machines and over 30 table games.
